My grandpaw decided this year he would start a project in our back yard- a garden! He thought it would be fun to teach our family how to grow our own food and plant a garden. I think after day one of planting- he realized he bit off a little more than he wanted to chew. Planting a garden with a 1 & 3 year old ... not real easy!
We all waked out to the back yard last Saturday to see a HUGE piece of land plowed and ready to "plant"... my first reaction was- I hope someone besides me is picking this "garden". On Saturday Me the hubbs, Kids, my Daddy, & my grandparents all planted Lettuce, Radish, and Onions. The kids had a blast playing in the dirt and attempted to work hard with the rakes! It will be an adventure this summer to see if their desire to play in the dirt keeps up or if we end up with an un-picked garden! haha!
Anyways.. my ahhh haaa moment came a few days later when Popaw again brought back more things for us to plant. He came up with a 50lb bag of potato's - yes I said 50 lbs! The potato's were just starting to bud and make the "eyes". He was excited to show me how to cut the eye's off the potatos and get them ready to plant. He then put the un-edyed portion in a washpan because they were "good eatin' " After he showed me and went off to plow more field, I sat there by myself, cutting the eyes of potato's and throwing the good parts in the wash pan. All of a sudden a memory of my childhood came flooding back and the tears came with it! I can remember year after year growing up and staying with my Great grandmaw. I can remember her saying- "No we can't play yet- we've got to eye taters" Now, i had no idea until this very week what eying a potato even meant. All I ever knew was that on the days she had to "eye Taters" she fixed us Potato Soup for lunch.... and now I know why!
I sat there cutting the eyes out of the potato's and the tears began falling down my cheeks...
A memory that had been buried in my mind for many years came flooding back, and i'm so grateful that it did. So to honor my sweet sweet Great Grandmaw that I miss daily- I made Homemade Potato Soup last night, with my leftover potato's- and it was awesome!
I LOVE & Miss my grandmaw daily... she would be happy to see me with my "Taters"
